Director of Bands
Johnathan A. Ancell currently serves as Director of Bands at Grayson High School in Gwinnett County, Georgia. As the Director of Bands at Grayson High, he is charged with overseeing the band program of 210 students. This includes the Concert Band II, Concert Band I, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band, Winterguard, Percussion Ensemble and the 150-Member Marching Band. During his time at Grayson, the bands have earned numerous superior ratings at Large Group Performance Evaluation and Class Champion awards. In Fall 2021, the Marching Band performed in the programs first Bands of America Regional in Jacksonville, AL. In January 2024, the band marched in the London New Years Day Parade.
Prior to his appointment at Grayson High School, he served as Director of Bands at Shiloh Middle School in Gwinnett County, Georgia, while also serving on the marching band educational staff at Duluth High and Chattahoochee High. At Shiloh Middle, his bands consistently earned superior ratings at Large Group Performance Evaluation, had many students participate in UGA’s MidFest Honor Band, District Honor Band, All-State Band, and experienced an increase in enrollment from 190 students to 310 throughout his 5-year tenure. For the 2018-2019 & 2019-2020 school year, he was runner-up for Teacher of the Year.
Johnathan received his Bachelors of Music in Music Education (percussion) from Georgia Southern University in 2015 and completed his Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Columbus State University in 2019. In Fall of 2022, he completed his Ed.S in Instructional Technology from Kennesaw State University.
He is a member of the Atlanta Wind Symphony, an all adult community band based out of North Fulton area, which performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference in Chicago, IL in December 2021.
